Capital gains inclusion rate: 50%

In Canada, only part of your gains is taxable. For 2026, the inclusion rate is 50%: half the gain is added to your taxable income, then taxed at your marginal rate (i.e. ~27% effective in Ontario for high brackets).

Important (verified): the planned increase of the inclusion rate to 66.67% was cancelled in March 2025. The rate stays at 50% for everyone, with no $250,000 threshold.

The TFSA (tax-free savings account)

The TFSA is the equivalent of a tax-exempt wrapper: gains and dividends are entirely tax-free, and withdrawals are free. Contribution cap ~$7,000/yr in 2026 (unused room carries over).

The RRSP (registered retirement savings plan)

The RRSP offers a deduction on contribution and a tax deferral: you only pay tax on withdrawal (ideally at retirement, at a lower marginal rate).

Dividends and distributing ETFs

In a taxable account, eligible Canadian dividends benefit from a gross-up + dividend tax credit, which lowers the effective rate. Foreign dividends (US/world ETFs) are taxed as ordinary income and often incur US withholding (15% via the W-8BEN form).
